    Taking into consideration the “everything-but-the-kitchen-sink” content presentation, I’m surprised any potential customer would take it upon themsleves to hunt down an email subscription sign-up page.

    Perhaps B&N feels the steps to create an account are only moderately longer than it would take to subscribe to an email. Would be interesting to compare metrics and conversions.
