All about this Scrappy Email Marketer

Welcome to my little corner of the marketing world.  My name is Andrew Kordek and I am currently the Manager of Optimization at Groupon.  I have spent almost 17 years in sales and marketing, am a recognized email industry expert and an avid learner of new ways to become a better marketer.  I am bold in my approach to marketing and love to push the envelope as often as I get.  I understand the mentality of the sales side and market in reality, rather than corporate fluff.  I am an advocate in doing what is right, rather than what is quick.

I blog for passion and love of marketing.

I am a competitive softball player with an incredible family life. I enjoy my privacy when I am off the grid and I love hanging out at home raising my son, being a great husband and grilling and chillin in the summer time.   Music, church, family, the Cubs and football are three things that I hold sacred.

Thank you for stopping by my blog and if you have any suggestions, feel free to drop me a line.

    Hi Andrew,

I am a huge Bears fan as well, growing up on the far north side of Chicago (Grayslake) I became a Cubs one too.

I just thought you might be interested in attending an event one of my clients is having soon.

I’d like to offer you a free press pass to attend ExactTarget’s Connections ’08 user conference. You’ll come away with great resources for stories, ideas and a clear picture on where the email and one-to-one marketing industry is headed.

Nearly 50 ExactTarget customers, industry analysts and thought leaders will be presenting case studies and sharing marketing philosophies during the conference, held in Indianapolis, Ind. from Sept. 23-25. New marketing guru Joseph Jaffe ( is one of the headlining speakers and will be addressing the crowd on Sept. 23rd.

A complete agenda is online at I can arrange any pre-conference or onsite interviews you’d like to get. I’d love to see you at Connections ’08!

Let me know if it sounds like something you might be interested in and if you would like me to send you a free press pass & hotel information?

    Take care and GO BEARS!

    Hi Andrew,

Saw your comment on Bronto’s blog petition to ban the word “blast” and had to stop by and say “my kinda guy!”

Any Slavic genes in you? I’d do exactly the same in that situation!

Just recently found your blog but am already a big fan. Might not sure in the distress of a lifetime of being a Cubs fan, but as a Mets fan I’ve had my share of woeful moments.

I also wanted to see if you would be kind enough to check out my blog, linked above and let me know what you think. If you like it maybe even link in your blogroll?

    Take care.

Hi Andrew. Great blog. Lots of awesome info. I look forward to reading more.

You seem to be chummy with a few of the ESPs. I am looking for a new one for a client of mine and was wondering if you ever did a post on who were your favs or who were the worst?

A few features I am interested in are SWYN; FTAF w/access to Gmail, Yahoo Mail, Hotmail; full authentication support (SPF, domainkey, DKIM); and would prefer a custom From address ( vs. the VerticalResponse ( approach.

    Hey Rick,

First off, thanks for the compliment and thanks for reading my blog.

In regards to your question centered around ESPs. Yes, it is true that I do have some friends who work at ESP’s. That being said, I am truly vendor neutral. The reason I say this, is that there are some really great ESP’s out there that can do exactly what you want but it boils down to personal preference on things such as the UI, the support and ease of use for YOU.

There are some top notch ESP’s whom I respect and know folks in, but I find that their UI was not for me. It was a personal preference on my part, not a reflection on how well they can deliver email or offer me support.

That being said, my assumption is that your volume does not go into the millions or tens of millions a month so looking at an enterprise level system might be a little too much. Below you will find a list of some of the ESP’s that I know and trust. It will take some time to perhaps narrow down a few of them to eval, but anyone of these can help. They are in no particular order of preference 🙂

    Blue Sky Factory
    Gold Lasso
    Datran Media
    BrightWave Marketing

I am sure that I forgot a few because as I write this I have only had 1 cup of coffee. If you need further guidance, I am here to help and you can contact me offline at theemailzoo at gmail dot

    Good Luck
